Ismail Shammout

Nowadays many artists complain for a lack of meaning. Their works reflect or express a state of separation or alienation. We often can identify with that easily.

That was not the case for Ismail Shammout however; what he carried with him on the refuge path from his hometown Lid, in Palestine, to Gaza, would forever remain in his works. His brother who died of thirst during the refuge march, his homeland with its orange trees, flowers and traditional dresses, and the rights of his people, remain in his works.

Seen in different eyes as he and his talent grew, his works express a state of unity between art, social causes and peoples’ realities. He worked as a sweets seller as well as a teacher, yet his talent was not to be buried.
Here are some works by Ismail Shammout.
